April 2023 Meeting Minutes

PHXMQG Meeting Minutes- April 8 , 2023

In person meeting at the Pyle Center. 1p-3pm. 53 people in attendance. We have 100 members! 

Board Members present: Erika Daniels, Elisabet Hannafin,  Cindy Stohn,  Michelle Jensen , Kristin Floyd and Candace Lannon

President Erika Daniels opened the meeting at 1:05pm

Welcome & information from President Erika Daniels- who welcomed all to our  PHXMQG monthly meeting. 

AQG Show- We have winners, those that entered quilts and won awards were asked to stand. Claire Victor, Kathy O’brien and Bonnie Bobman all had awards. Erika mentioned that the AQG show takes all quilts, so it is a great place for “first-timers” to showcase quilts. 

Quilt Shops– Pam Maylor will create a list that will be added to website of all local quilt shops. 

The guild is still looking for those to help with Sunshine & Hospitality, for member care, birthday recognition, Member spotlight. Let anyone from the board know if you can help or want more information.

Tech Chairs News– new items listed in shop, hats, canvas bags and new T-Shirts. Be sure to check out the PHXMQG swag!

Secretary Report

  • March Minutes were posted to website. 
  •  Motion for Approval of the march Minutes was made by Andi Stanfield , second by Mayo Cox,  Minutes approved. 

Treasurer’s Report: As of April 2023:

  • Currently $13,217.11 in bank and 219.07 in PayPal Account, Total Assets $13,436.18
  • Expenses year to date included programs, Community service, Door Prizes, Pyle center rent and Zoom costs. 
  • Passive fund raising Fry’s. Cindy working to get Target approved. Members are encouraged  to sign up for Fry’s.

  • Cindy also reminded all to beging gathering things for Summer Destash in July, and we are looking for guild members to help with that. Let Cindy know if you are interested. There will be no general meeting that day, but we will have a Sew Day, if members want to do Charity sewing or bring their own items to work on. 

Program : Demo Day!  Members had an opportunity to get into groups and stop at 6 stations to learn new techniques. Bonnie shared ergonomic tips for sewing, Kim shared making laminate bags from unusual materials, Bree shared straight-line walking foot tips & tricks, Laura helped us understand adding zippers and Carol showed us 4-patch Kaleidoscope quilt techniques.

Demo day was a great success, we are so lucky to see such talent in our group, and people willing to share!

Next Month: Longer Sew Day with Cactus Wall Hanging!

Overview of Upcoming Year/Programs:

There will be 4 Virtual Meetings, 2 Challenges, 1 Demo Day, 1 sale, several Sew days and 10 Sew & Chats.  We have opted not to offer hybrid meetings at this time. 

It was also mentioned that if there is desire from members to bring in other (above & beyond regular programs) lectures or programs, that members could reach out to their favorite quilter  to get information about cost/availability. We will coordinate with Claire/The Board to determine what else we can do, based on room rental or zoom. We have money in our bank account that we would like to be able to enjoy some fun events!

Sew & Chats will be the 4th Saturday of the month from 1-3 (Not offered in November or December). Email link for this Zoom will be sent out at the beginning of the week prior to the Saturday. 

Challenges: Make it Modern will be in September- virtual. Traditional Block made modern, where members are given 3 hours to complete mini quilt, winner gets free membership for following year! Second challenge will be a Fusing Challenge, that can be brought to December Holiday party. 

Raffles- Laura Flagler will be organizing raffles this year, and she passed around a sign up sheet to give members a chance to donate items & put together baskets. Remember to bring your cash for raffles! There will surely be some great items! There were 2 baskets this month, Maya Cox and 

 Community outreach

  • Diana Jacobson talked about ways that guild members could help, either cutting fabric for “kits”, binding, piecing or quilting. Please reach out to Diana if you would like to be involved. At each meeting there are opportunities to pick up quilts, drop them off, etc. 

Block of the Month

  •  BOM is free to members; Lucky Cuff  written by Dorie Blaisdell is the FREE pattern for this year, and Barb Brandt is leading BOM this year! The pattern is posted on website, and we will be working in rows again with this one. There are options for a “dark” or “light” version, depending on the background you like. 
  • Barb shared that this month April is Row 6  and for May Row 3. Many guild members brought their works in progress to share. Many varieties in color and even 1 member who reduced the block to half the size!

Block lotto- Andi Stanfield
  • April Block Lotto winner was Susan Taubel ! (Stretched Star)
  • May Blocks-  Tall Flower Block with green background- Meeting in person, please bring your blocks to the meeting. If you will not be present, you can still email pictures of the block to Andi. 
  • For each block you make, you will receive one chance to win the all the blocks entered. You receive an extra chance (6 chances) for every five blocks.

Sol Bee 2023- Exchange took place. 

Sol Bee is led by Francine Taylor ([email protected]). Please contact Francine for more information, there is still time to join. 

Door Prizes & Raffles! We had two lovely raffle baskets this month, Winners were Sara and Pam!

Show & Share: Many members brought show & share quilts that were just gorgeous!  Remember to fill out paper form at the sign in table to go with  your items, so that we can give credit if shared on Social Media platforms.

  • Hover on My Account and click on Membership Directory – it may take a little time to load
  • To help find your friends, you can sort members by name, email, address, city, and state
  • If you are not listed in the directory, click on the “Click button to add yourself” to fill out the form
  • Remember – ONLY PHXMQG members can see this information

Next meeting is May 13, 2023 from 10-3pm in person only at the Pyle Center.  We will have have an extended meeting, as we are making the Cactus Wall Hangings. Bring your machine.
